I’ve been wanting to make a wall hang for awhile and thought I’d start off with something simple with tassels before I attempt to dive into more intricate macrame and knots. This is super easy to make, just put on a podcast, tv show or some music and create away!
Materials you need:
- Macramé cotton cord* (3mm – I used one whole bundle + a little of another, if you shorten your length by ½ inch, you should be able to just use one bundle)
- Cotton twine*
- Rose gold straws* (30 pieces – or tubes of preference)
- Clear braiding bands*
- 3/4″ x 36″ wood dowel * (I purchased mine at hobby lobby)
- Fabric scissors*
- Hot glue gun*
Optional materials (if waiting to stain dowel):
- Wood stain*
- Paint brush* or Foam brush*
- Mineral Spirits*
- Cardboard/plastic/newspaper (any throw away surface to work on)
- Disposable Gloves*
- Shop rags*
Instructions:
Step 1: Stain the dowel. Set up your work surface and put on gloves. Clean the dowel with mineral spirits and a rag. Dip brush into stain and rub on from top to bottom, spinning dowel around to cover completely. Allow to dry 2 minutes, then rub off with clean rag. Set aside.
Step 2: Prep for the tassels. You will need 30 bunches of twine total, each consisting of 30 individual strands of twine, 16″ in length. I made these by measuring out 16″, then simply folding over and stretching out the twine onto itself 30 times.
Also cut an additional 30 16″ strips of twine. I cut each of these individually, instead of folding over (this is the string that will be wrapped at the bottom of the knot).
Step 3: Cut 30 strands of macramé cord, each 3′ in length.
Step 4: Make the square knot on the tassels. Take one bunch of twine, cut each of the ends where the string is joined with scissors, then trim the edges to make even (but don’t worry about making them precisely even, you will perfect the tassels after you hang them).
Fold twine bunch in half and secure with a clear band.
Take one of the macramé strands and tuck under the clear band.
Now to make the square knot. Do this by laying the twine on a flat surface and separating each end into 2 sections (4 total).
Fold and tuck, then pull to tighten. Took these pictures without the macramé cord attached for less confusion (sequence: follow top right photo in reverse “L”)

Repeat this 30 times.
Step 5: Finish the tassels by wrapping a single strip of twine underneath the square knot. Plug in hot glue gun. Lay the tassel flat and tie the twine in a tight knot.
Then, tightly wrap twine around, layering downwards each time you wrap around.
When you reach the end of the rope, dab on glue to the end and gently dab to affix the cord.
It should look something like this:
Repeat with all tassels.
Step 6: Thread the rose gold straws on each strand of the macramé cord.
Step 7: Hang your wooden dowel. I did this by wrapping around twine on each end and securing with hot glue.
Step 8: Make your pattern. Do this by using blue tape and placing on the wall in the desired pattern. I went ahead and placed two strands on each end to gauge where I wanted the angels to start/stop.
Loosely tie each tassel strand onto the wooden dowel, trying to get each end to touch the bottom of the blue tape.
Plug in hot glue gun. Make sure each tassel is turned around so you see the backside of the knots. Tighten knots on the dowel and secure with hot glue. Trim off excess after glue has dried.
Step 9: Time to trim the edges! Turn the entire wall hanging around so the tassels are now facing forward. Run your fingers through the ends of the tassels to ensure they are straight and not tangled. Then begin trimming the edges so they line up with the blue tape.
And done!
